Perimenopause vs. Hailey Bieber: My Feed’s Latest Contradiction
My algorithm has an identity crisis and, apparently, it’s as confused as I am.
My Instagram algorithm knows me frighteningly well. Take the other day, when an ad popped up for Flo, the menstrual app, that questioned if I had any of the symptoms of perimenopause. I actually use the Flo app to track my menstrual cycle, so this felt slightly intrusive, but not nearly as much as the fact that Instagram is, clearly, keeping tabs on my age, as I am certain I am in the throes of perimenopause. And note to anyone over 38–you likely are too.
Then, the following day, I was served an ad for Hailey Bieber’s Rhode Skincare; Hailey dousing her face in the viral glazing milk, skin perfectly plump, glowing, and glossy, just the way she and millions of other young women like it.
